'Vixen' is out in paperback!
Launched in London on 10th February at Bar Wotever, and in Manchester on Friday 13th February (lucky for some!). There are many more launch events and readings coming up in February / March 2015... check out the Gig List page for details of one close to you.
Thank you to all the wonderful folk who have already turned up to the readings. Your support is incredible!
The Palace of Curiosities is number one in the Waterstones hardback fiction chart!
This is amazing news. Picture snapped 16th April 2013 at Waterstones Deansgate in Manchester. If you look VERY closely there's a black sticker on each cover, reading 'Signed By The Author'.
However many readings I've done (and I've done plenty over the *ahem* years) this one was different. This was The Big One. I was so nervous I couldn't sit still. Seventy tickets pre-sold, and 30 more folk turned up on the night. The room was packed: standing room only. I found out afterwards that Waterstones had to shift the event to the largest room they had.
There was my novel, stacked on a table. Posters with my name. No, I didn't think I'd ever get to this point, yet here I was.
The audience were, in a word, wonderful: so much love and generosity. What an astonishing launch event. I honestly don't think it could have been better. Waterstones even sold out of books! I thought no-one bought hardback fiction any more. Clearly I was wrong. The manager emailed me and said the event was 'one of the best of Deansgate's history'. What, me? Yes, I'm stunned.
There's been some great feedback – the mistressful Elizabeth Baines has posted a blog review of the night, here:
http://elizabethbaines.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/rosie-garlands-launch-of-palace-of.html?spref=fb
And what a sign-off! 'The characters are fascinating, and Victorian London is vividly captured, and of course the language sparkles like sharp-cut jewels.'

Wednesday 31st May 18:30
Waterstones Deansgate is thrilled to welcome Rosie Garland to the store for the launch of her new novel, 'The Night Brother'. Join us on Wednesday 31st May at 6:30pm to hear Rosie discuss her fantastic third novel, before answering questions from the audience and signing copies of her books.
From the author of The Palace of Curiosities and Vixen comes a bold new novel exploring questions of identity, sexual equality and how well we really know ourselves. Perfect for fans of Angela Carter, Sarah Waters and Erin Morgenstern. Rich are the delights of late nineteenth-century Manchester for young siblings Edie and Gnome. They bicker, banter, shout and scream their way through the city's streets, embracing its charms and dangers. But as the pair grow up, it is Gnome who revels in the night-time, while Edie wakes exhausted each morning, unable to quell a sickening sense of unease, with only a dim memory of the dark hours.
With echoes of Orlando and Jekyll & Hyde, this is a story about the vital importance of being honest with yourself. Every part of yourself. After all, no-one likes to be kept in the dark.
Tickets are £5/3 and available online and in store.

On 12th July 2023 I was made a Fellow of The Royal Society of Literature! It was something I never imagined in a hundred years.
It's a tremendous honour, & a testament to the quality of my writing. To say I am thrilled is a huge misunderstatement.

Delighted to get the opportunity to talk to Manchester Festival of Libraries about the importance of libraries in my life!
And there are many more –
Watch all the short films featuring four accomplished Manchester creative practitioners who have worked closely with libraries over the course of their careers.
Hear how libraries can support artists, writers, dancers, musicians and more to create original work, access valuable resources, gain practical support and inspire creativity.
These films aim to highlight the rich creative diversity of our libraries, and pave the way for emerging artists to head to their local library for ideas and insight for their next big project.
You can view all the films below.

Absolutely thrilled to announce this new film poem – created over 2021 in collaboration with amazing filmaker Jane Glennie. Inspired by the life of dancer and choreographer Tilly Losch, the film explores notions of erasure, strategies for persistence and the centrality of creative expression for the life of a woman in perpetual motion.
We are delighted with the reception the film is receiving! A list of film festivals is below.

It's 40 years since The March Violets released our 1st 7" EP (seriously, FORTY).
So it’s a great time to announce that this tasty 5 CD Box Set is now up for pre order from Jungle Records!
The Palace of Infinite Darkness - In addition to all the singles plus all the extended versions, the box has six excellent BBC sessions, 23 tracks with 9 unreleased songs (also reissued as Big Soul Kiss 2LP yellow vinyl after a sold-out RSD release).
