15.5.2014 - Museums at Night, Manchester

Museums at Night
The Portico Library
57 Mosley Street
Manchester
M2 3HY

Tel: 0161 236 6785

7-10pm

Rosie Garland will be giving a special late-night reading as part of the renowned Museums at Night Festival.

Other guests include the wonderful Jo Bell, plus Marli Roode & Rodge Glass.

Museums at Night, which explodes into life from 15 – 17 May 2014, is an annual UK-wide festival which seeks to encourage visitors into museums, galleries and heritage sites by throwing their doors open after hours and putting on special evening events.

Co-ordinated by non-profit cultural publishing organisation Culture24, Museums at Night is an opportunity for the cultural and heritage sector to come together around a single, simple campaign that is attractive to venues, audiences and the media.

Museums at Night ties in with the European campaign, La Nuit Des Musées, which takes place on Saturday 17th May 2014. In the UK, to allow venues greater flexibility, it will run over Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th May. The date is significant as it's the weekend nearest to 18 May, International Museums Day.

Also eight open mic spots are available (one poem - two minutes per poet) on a first come first served basis so if you would like a slot please arrive early to avoid disappointment. We are filming each night so everyone who performs will get a shiny new Youtube video if they want one.

Host, multiple slam winner Kieren King says "If you walk down a street and see three signs, one advertising live music, one advertising live comedy and the third advertising live poetry chances are people would go to either of the first two. We are looking to change that and give people a fun and entertaining night out".

Forget what you learned in school. This is poetry at its best.

GAYDIO – The Sunday Forum with Andrew Edwards
What's it like to grow up different?

Writer Rosie Garland is perhaps better known as Rosie Lugosi the Lesbian Vampire Queen. Rosie started out in the gothic rock band The March Violets in the 1980s and has developed a hugely successful career as an award winning poet and and cabaret performer. Her most famous alter ego is Rosie Lugosi the Lesbian Vampire Queen and Rosie reveals to Andrew what it feels like to perform the character.

Rosie is enjoying new success as a novelist and her first book The Palace of Curiosities was published last year and won wide acclaim. Novelist Sarah Waters dubbed it "a jewel box of a novel".

Rosie has eclectic tastes in music and you can hear her choices and her reasons in the interview. Rosie also talks about her coming out as a lesbian and more recently as bisexual. The Mix Tape is on Gaydio on Sunday morning from 7am and then on demand from 10am nwplayer.gaydio.co.uk and 88.4FM.

Join author Rosie Garland and Victorian sideshow performers for an evening of mystery and excitement in the atmospheric Living World gallery at Manchester Museum. Rosie will read from her startling debut novel which follows the fortunes of Eve and Abel – cast out by Victorian society, they become The Lion-Faced Girl and The Flayed Man, star performers in The Palace of Curiosities. Rosie has performed in previous incarnations as the singer in cult goth band The March Violets and as twisted alter-ego Rosie Lugosi the Vampire Queen. She has published five collections of poetry and last year won the Mslexia Novel Competition which landed her a publishing deal with HarperCollins. A circus troupe, also called The Palace of Curiosities, will provide further entertainment with the aid of fabulously inventive props and razor sharp wit. Prepare to be amazed!

'Twisted Sister'

Where I recall my seven-year ordeal at the hands of a female stalker.

It took a long, long time - but I got my life back. With the help of friends, family and Greater Manchester Police.

If anything I say in this article helps support someone who is going through an experience like this, then it's worth it.
