Feb 2021 - short story featured in 'Queer'

I can safely say I never expected to share an anthology with Sappho & Oscar Wilde!
So I’m thrilled my story ‘You’ll Do’ is featured in ‘Queer: LGBTQ Writing from Ancient Times to Yesterday’ edited by Frank Wynne.
https://headofzeus.com/books/9781789542332

Queer is an unabashed and unapologetic anthology, drawing together writing from Catullus to Sappho, from Rimbaud to Anaïs Nin, and from Armistead Maupin to Alison Bechdel, translator Frank Wynne has collected a hundred of the finest works representing queer love by LGBTQ authors.
Queer straddles the spectrum of queer experience, from Verlaine's sonnet in praise of his lover's anus and Emily Dickinson's exhortation of a woman's beauty, to Alison Bechdel's graphic novel of her coming out, Juno Dawson's reflections on gender and Oscar Wilde's 'De Profundis'.

I’m thrilled to announce that Val McDermid has selected me as one of the 10 most compelling LGBTQI+ writers working in the UK today!

Val said: “These writers are writing for everyone. These are not words for a niche readership. These are not writings for a ghetto. These are the works of writers who have something to say that can be – and should be – heard by as many people as possible.”

She continued: “Auden was wrong when he claimed “poetry makes nothing happen”. Words do change the world, reader by reader. They open our eyes, they provoke thought. The work of these 10 writers… will awaken in us fresh delight in the wonder of words.”

The list was commissioned by the National Centre for Writing and British Council, supported by Arts Council England as part of a two-year programme to promote writing from the UK to an international audience. It also includes the amazing Colette Bryce, Juno Dawson, Juliet Jacques, Keith Jarrett, Kirsty Logan, Andrew McMillan, Fiona Mozley, Mary Paulson-Ellis & Luke Turner.

October 2017 - Diva review of The Night Brother!

Huge thanks to Kaite Welsh, Books Editor at Diva Magazine for this superb review of The Night Brother!
Here’s the full text of the review…

Diva review October 2017

"A must for anyone missing Sarah Waters’ foray into the Victorian era, siblings Edie and Gnome explore the delights of 19th century Manchester in Rosie Garland’s third novel - he during the night, her during the day. The prose is lush and vivid as gender fluidity mingles with magical realism. Edie grows increasingly jealous of her brother’s freedom and exhausted by her double life and the restrictions society places upon her. In The Night Brother, Garland crafts a study in dualism that would make Henry Jekyll jealous, and establishes herself as one of Britain’s best new historical novelists."

The Time-Travelling Suffragettes - 2018

The Time-Travelling Suffragettes

Photographed by Chris Keller Jackson at Cherie Bebe Burlesque.
https://www.crankphoto.co.uk/

In 2018, to celebrate the centenary of some women getting the vote in the UK, I devised the Time-Travelling Suffragettes. (Music performed by pianist Éilish McCracken).

“Armed with banners, a twinkle in their eye and a spanner or two for throwing into the works, The Time –Travelling Suffragettes have travelled to the present day to raise their voices in rousing song. They perform updated versions of nineteenth-century popular classics, making lyrical stops along the way in their musical journey towards the twenty-first century.
Inspired by the enduring influence of Music Hall and its power to subvert whilst being thoroughly entertaining, they cast a queerly suffragette eye upon songs such as The Boy I Love Is Up In The Gallery, I’m Shy Mary Ellen and Hold Your Hand Out, Naughty Boy – and many more.
A timely reminder that suffragettes were far more than Nice Ladies In Hats, that the battles are never done, and how far we still have to go.
In Kitty’s words – ‘we are historical oddities from a time of struggle and dissent. We beg your forbearance! After all, 21st century audiences cannot possibly comprehend what it is like to live in a world which harbours inequality…”

17-21.8.2020 - Leeds Digital Pride ONLINE

Digital Pride Programme

Starting on Monday 17 August, celebrations of Leeds Pride will be showcased across a range of digital channels. The full programme is below:

Pride Film Festival
The University of Leeds, Leeds Arts University and Leeds Beckett University have collaborated with Hyde Park Picture House to create a self-curating LGBT+ film programme. The programme provides links to more than 25 films, both long and short form, which can be navigated as a personal mini Pride Film Festival.
We are really excited about the programme, with Leeds’ friendly, local indie cinema Hyde Park Picture house profiling a new film every day. It includes suggestions from LGBT+ author, musician, poet Rosie Garland (aka Rosie Lugosi); and members of the LGBT+ networks at the three coordinating universities.

The full film listing will go live on the University’s Medium account later this week. Follow the University of Leeds on twitter where we will be sharing all Medium articles as they go live throughout the week.

Absolutely thrilled to announce this new film poem – created over 2021 in collaboration with amazing filmaker Jane Glennie. Inspired by the life of dancer and choreographer Tilly Losch, the film explores notions of erasure, strategies for persistence and the centrality of creative expression for the life of a woman in perpetual motion.
