Lecture / Cabaret
13:30 - 15:00

Rosie Garland, writer and cabaret performer from Manchester (UK), will tell us about the suffragette movement in the UK in a lecture, and jazz it up with a Victorian suffragette song or two.
After her talk she is invited to Fleur Pieret’s salon, where Els Flour of het Archief- en Onderzoekscentrum voor Vrouwengeschiedenis (AVG-Carhif) will address the similarities and differences with the struggle for women’s vote in Belgium.

From there we take it to a salon discussion on which battles still need to be fought today. For this discussion, we invited several panellist, all believing in the benefits of an intersectional feminism and will discuss what that means to them.

Clarice M.D. Gargard (NL) is journalist and UN-Women Representative. In March 2019, her documentary film Daddy and the Warlord (director Shamira Raphaela) was released. The doc deals with her family background and the Liberian civil wars. Her book ‘Drakendochter’ (Arbeiderspers),will be launched in september 2019.

Ilse Ghekiere (BE) is a dancer and activist (#Wetoo, ENGAGEMENT). In 2017 Ghekiere received a grant from the Flemish government in order to research sexism within the Belgian dance scene. She is author of several #metoo-related articles, amongst which #Wetoo: What Dancers Talk About When They Talk About Sexism. She founded ENGAGEMENT, an artist movement that puts issues concerning sexual harrasment, sexism and abuse of power in the art world on the agenda.

Simon(e) van Saarloos (NL) is a writer, performer and philosopher. Her manifest “Het monogame drama” (by August available in English as “Playing Monogamy”) did not go unnoticed. In September the essay “Herdenk herdacht”, about queer oblivion, white remembering and physically commemorating.

Entering its sixth edition, each year we have programmed both local performers and international talent within a variety of art forms: music, literature, film, dance, theatre, exposition, performance…

Origins of the Outsiders: The New Goths

Saturday, 6th July 2019
12:30pm - 1:45pm

The history of goth culture goes far beyond Bauhaus, the Cure, and copious amounts of black eyeliner. In fact, you can trace its roots as far back as the barbarian outsiders of post-Roman late antiquity. In their book, The Evolution of Goth Culture, scholars Karl and Beverley Spracklen trace the movement’s trajectory through the ages, from its genesis to its eventual progression into modern gothic alternative culture.

Spracklen will be joined by writer and lead singer of The March Violets, Rosie Garland, and organiser of Gothic Manchester Festival, Laura Ager, to discuss goth’s place then and now, the moral panics surrounding it, and the growing commodification of goth music, fashion, and counter-cultural resistance.

This event will be held in the beautiful gothic surroundings of Bradford Cathedral, so tighten your corsets and meet us at the altar.

Laura Ager is a researcher, educator, event organiser and relentless cultural enthusiast. From an early interest in 1990s sub-cultures to a recent PhD in festivals, Laura’s interests are in the connections between people, practices and places. She writes for several blogs and her latest project is the Yorkshire based pop-up cine-club, Film Fringe.

Rosie Garland
Novelist, poet and singer with post-punk band The March Violets, Rosie Garland’s work appears in Under the Radar, TSS, Longleaf Review, The Rialto, Ellipsis and elsewhere. She’s authored three novels: The Palace of Curiosities, Vixen, & The Night Brother, which The Times described as “a delight…with shades of Angela Carter.”

Karl Spracklen is a Professor of Sociology of Leisure and Culture at Leeds Beckett University, UK. He has published over a hundred papers, books and book chapters, all about leisure. His latest co-authored is The Evolution of Goth Culture (Emerald, 2018). He is the Principal Editor of Metal Music Studies.

Rosie Garland of The March Violets is delighted to present her paper “Radiant Girls: ‘You can’t be goth and queer and feminist’ – being an outsider amongst outsiders”

MASSmcr are a group of multidisciplinary researchers exploring the musical beats and sonic streets of Manchester and beyond. For this symposium we bring together academics, researchers, practitioners, students and community organisations to explore how music, sound and the sonic can be used to transcend boundaries and move beyond borders. At a time of global uncertainties from climate change and conflict zones, to national and international political upheaval, we question if music and the sonic can narrate and negate these changes and shift our understanding of core and peripheral preoccupations.

About MASSmcr
Established in 2018, Music and Sonic Studies Manchester (MASSmcr), based at Manchester Metropolitan University, conducts innovative research into music and sonic phenomena. We aim to produce new ways of understanding and experiencing the production, reception and aesthetics of music, sound and other sonic encounters. We seek to understand how sonic and musical practices shape our understanding of the world and how they inform diverse identities, communities and spaces.

This event will be followed by MASS Assembly at the Castle Hotel.
