Arvon Foundation Masterclass: Writing the Gothic & Weird in Fiction and Poetry

Zoom Masterclass with Rosie Garland
Friday June 17th 2022, 11:00 - 13:00 BST

In 1974, Angela Carter said ‘we live in Gothic times’. It has never been more apt. From subculture to high culture, the Gothic can be found in art, films and literature today. Aimed at writers of fiction or poetry, or any point in between. So, with lantern held aloft in trembling fingers, explore the haunted labyrinth & discover the surprises within…
During this masterclass, Rosie Garland will draw on her experience as a writer of Gothic-themed novels and poetry as well as a career performing with cult Goth band The March Violets. From the fantastical & fearsome to the gorgeously ghostly, you’ll be introduced to a variety of literary Gothic treats. There will also be practical exercises to prompt writing and help you to craft your own Gothic tales.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar (11:00-13:00), so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.
"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

9.2.2022: Arvon at Home - Guest Reading ONLINE

Arvon at Home - Guest Reading ONLINE

Reading and Q&A with Rosie Garland via Zoom
Wednesday February 9th 2022, 19:15 GMT

Now more than ever we need stories – to engage, to distract, to entertain, to nourish, and to help us make sense of what we’re living through. And so while you can’t come to us, instead we will come to you, bringing a taste of Arvon into your home one night a week. Every week an Arvon tutor will join us as a guest, to read from their own work and answer your questions live and in person online.

This Live Guest Reading is with Rosie Garland on Wednesday 9th February at 19:15 GMT

The reading and interactive Q&A will be hosted on Zoom. This is a live event and will not be recorded.

We are more committed than ever to helping writers find inspiration, and to make space for their own creativity, no matter the setting. So join us from the comfort of your sofa and listen to writers share their work, the stories behind their work, and invaluable writing advice directly from their own desk (or maybe the kitchen table).
